Colonial Pilgrim Ships 1621-1631
England to New England (Mostly)
Tracing the arrival of families in the New World is an intriguing challenge at best. With the whole "Thanksgiving" story and perhaps the most complete records the arrival of the Mayflower and the story of its passengers is by far the most familiar, and indeed entire societies have formed to trace its descendents in the American fabric. Yet, after the Mayflower's voyage in 1620, and the Pilgrim's survival of the first year, more ships followed with the Mayflower itself making a second trip. Five colonial ships sailed almost immediately following, then ten years later eleven ships sailed in 1630 as a group called the Winthrop Fleet, with six more to follow in late 1630 and 1631. The Pilgrims in Massachusettes were not entirely welcoming to arrivals of different shadings of even the Protestant faith. Some of the new arrivals, follwers of Roger Williams, left Massachusets and founded Rhode Island (see Sweets of Rhode Island). The list of the passengers of these ships are very limited with names appearing in colonial records of land claims, but can be difficult to trace to individuals who left from England. Many more ships would follow in the journey across the Atlantic, with arrivals along the coast and up the Hudson River, but here is a list of Colonial Pilgrim Ships to New England from 1621 to 1631.
